eastside - Veenas in Tanjavur
Publication
The veena has been played in Thanjavur for centuries — carved into the stone of the Brihadeeshwara Temple, mentioned in early Sanskrit texts as the instrument of Saraswati, goddess of learning. Today, in the same city, artisans still build it by hand from jackfruit wood that's over a hundred years old, keeping one of South India's oldest instruments alive.
